Safeguarding Curriculum
At Sutton Manor Primary School, we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all our children. Our safeguarding approach and curriculum is designed to empower children with the knowledge and skills to stay safe both in and out of school.
In order to promote good behaviour, we have three rules that are applied right across our school:
At Sutton Manor Primary School, we recognise the critical importance of providing comprehensive safeguarding advice for families and children to ensure the well-being and safety of our pupils. We have chosen to utilise resources from the NSPCC, Barnardos (PATHS) and Jigsaw due to their thorough and reputable expertise in child protection and safeguarding.
Our Approach to Safeguarding
-
Comprehensive Curriculum: Our safeguarding curriculum is integrated into various subjects and activities to ensure that children learn about personal safety, online safety, and the importance of speaking up if they feel unsafe.
-
Interactive Learning: We use a variety of engaging teaching methods such as role-playing, scenario-based discussions, and interactive workshops to help children understand how to protect themselves and others.
-
Building Resilience: We focus on building resilience in children, teaching them to recognise potential risks, set boundaries, and seek help when needed.
-
Empowering Students: Through age-appropriate lessons, we empower students to make informed decisions, recognise signs of abuse, and understand the importance of consent and boundaries.
Key Topics Covered
-
Personal Safety: Teaching children about personal space, body autonomy, and safe touch. Amongst other specific topics, we teach water safety, people who help us, safe road crossing, bikeability and stranger danger.
- Personal, Social, Spirtual, Moral and Character Education: In order to ensure that children develop into well-rounded members of our community, we use Jigsaw as a basis for our PSHE curriculum and enhance this to support the specific needs of each cohort and individuals. We also provide PATHS workshops and all of our teachers have undertaken PATHS training.
-
Online Safety: Educating students on the risks of the internet, cyberbullying, and how to protect their personal information online.
-
Anti-Bullying: Promoting a culture of respect and kindness, and providing strategies to combat bullying behaviour.
-
Reporting Mechanisms: Informing children about who they can talk to if they have concerns or feel unsafe.
- School Values: Our SHINE values permetae all of our work (Service, Humility, Integrity, Nurturing, Excellence)
Parental Engagement
We believe that safeguarding is a collaborative effort between the school, parents, and the wider community. As parents, you play a crucial role in reinforcing the lessons learned at school and creating a safe environment at home.
-
Parent Workshops: We offer regular workshops and information sessions for parents to learn about our safeguarding curriculum and how they can support their children.
-
Open Communication: We encourage open communication between parents, teachers, and students to ensure that any safeguarding concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.
