Shining Lights Centre
GOOD NEWS- WE ARE NOW OPEN AGAIN AND HAVE A NEW PARTNER!
We are delighted to announce our partnership with The Saints Community Development Foundation! The Foundation will now be running activities from the centre, in line with government Covid restrictions, as well as continuing to work with our existing commu nity groups and hirers for the benefit of the Sutton Manor and St Helens community. There are many exciting projects planned, that will make a real and postive difference to the health and wellbeing of our young people, their families and members of the public, from 0-100+!!
Steve Leonard, director of the Foundation commented:
“After a long Covid delayed process, Saints Foundation can finally announce a partnership with Sutton Manor Primary school which sees us taking over the Shining Lights Centre in Sutton Manor. The schools Headteacher Monica Gladman has made no secret of the fact that the school and its governors lead by Mr Ernie Benbow wanted the centre back open with community-based activities. I am glad to say that we are in a position, after discussions with most of the previous user groups to have them back on board and starting back very shortly if not already.”
“Alongside the existing partners we have several new programmes to be announced such as the Women’s Mental Health Programme which will cover health and fitness, our Fill Up their Senses mother and baby groups, Saddle up with the Foundation cycling group, light exercise sessions for the more mature, coffee mornings, crafty afternoons and heritage sessions to name but a few. We will also be opening the centre for bookings of parties and events, fetes and galas.”
“Recently refurbished training and education facilities allows us to provide courses and training events ranging from Social care, getting back into employment, Rugby League Coaching, Safeguarding, First Aid and much more.”
“Already we have announced the first Veterans HQ in the town at the Shining Lights which is a massive statement of intent towards the veterans of the Foundation. Again, the centre has allowed us to extend our Veterans of the Foundation Breakfast club meetings to three times per week incorporating a Saturday morning which will allow working veterans to meet up and enjoy the get together.”
“The centre will allow us to expand on our programmes delivered from the Community Zone at the stadium and we look at this move as our first stage of expansion.”
“There is so much to look forward to for the people in and around the Sutton Manor area and it is a massive thanks to Monica, Ernie and all the staff for allowing this to happen.”

Update 14th July 2020
Message from the Governing Body:
On the 20th March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, the Shining Light Centre closed on a temporary basis. This was based on Government/Dfe advice issued at that time.
As the pandemic progressed, there was a need to consider further when the centre could be re-opened. On the 8th July 2020 the Governing Body re-considered this however due to the continuing pandemic; health and safety/risk considerations and associated costs, it was decided that the centre should remain closed for a further period. Some centre users had already indicated that they were not going to return to use the Centre, due to the possible risks of doing so. As a result of the decision taken by the Governing Body contractors/staff/centre users and parents were duly notified of this decision.
We are aware that there has been a great deal of concern expressed on social media about a decision to close the Centre permanently. We seek to clarify that no decision has been taken to close the Centre permanently. We have however agreed to review its decision to reopen the Centre in the Autumn term.
Any decision in relation to the centre and the timing of any re-opening will be made in consideration with all Government/Dfe advice issued at that time.
If any further clarity is required, we would recommend that you contact the School.
The Shining Lights Centre is a community organisation supported by Sport England, within a separate building that is located on Forest Road, Sutton Manor, within the grounds of our school. The centre is under the control of St Helens Council and is managed by the Governing Body of the school and is available for lettings and hire.
We have a large multipurpose sports hall with a large upstairs area with changing rooms and shower facilities, office spaces, lift access to the upper floor, disabled access with a secure fenced outdoor area.
We have successful hire and lettings arrangements in place with groups such as Sutton Tornadoes, Taekwando, our over 50's community groups, adult fitness groups, local football groups to name just a few.
If you are interested in hiring any spaces please contact the Saints Community Development Foundation or our school office.
There are parking facilities for 30 cars.
For any further information, contact Mrs L Baker, office manager, on 01744 678700
