Art and Design
Intent
At Sutton Manor Primary School our Art and Design curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art and design.
As pupils progress, they will be encouraged to think creatively and critically. They will investigate and learn about a variety of artists and designers to develop rigorous understanding of the many disciplines within art, craft and design and how they shape our past and future.
Implementation
Sutton Manor Primary School's Art and Design curriculum is built around essential knowledge, understanding and key skills. These are broken into four headings (Drawing, Colour, Form, Printing) which enable clear continuity and progression.
Throughout their school life, children will revisit the different mediums and techniques whilst climbing the progression grid. This will ensure that our children have the skills and confidence to express themselves and to produce work that they can be proud of! We value the use of sketchbooks from Year 1 to Year 6 and encourage the importance of experimentation, exploration and encouraging ideas in imaginative ways.
As a school and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and design techniques.
Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art and design.
Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
