Year Two 2020 - 2021

Welcome to Year 2,
We are so excited to finally be back in school after isolating for 2 weeks. We continue to have lots of things in place within class and around the school to keep the children and staff safe.
Children should bring a named water bottle into school each day and bagels are available each morning free of charge to all pupils.
As of Monday 14th September, we are amending our uniform policy to allow children with pierced ears to wear one set of simple stud earrings if they so wish. We would still strongly recommend that children remove their earrings before coming to school, however if they are unable to do so you must sign a disclaimer.
By signing a disclaimer, you are taking full responsibility for your child’s earrings and all health and safety risks associated with wearing them to school, which includes playtimes and PE lessons. Children may tape the back of their earrings for PE lessons to lessen the risk of injury, but school and staff cannot do this for them.
Please note that this disclaimer does not apply to swimming.
This amendment ONLY applies to earrings, other jewellery will not be permitted, including any additional piercings.
This half term in English, our work will be linked to our Art work as we focus upon the works of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. We will be reading Monkey Puzzle, The Scarecrows’ Wedding and Room on the Broom and writing diary entries, postcards and stories. We will be sketching, shading and working with various media when drawing one of the characters from these texts.
In Maths we will focus on number and place value, addition and subtraction and measurement and in Science we will be exploring everyday materials, what can be made from specific materials and material properties.
Our work in History will be linked to our local area (Rainhill), the Rainhill Trails and Stephenson’s Rocket and our R.E we will be linked to Christianity and the way we treat our world.
Our P.E. lessons are typically on Friday afternoons. We would very much appreciate if you could ensure that full PE kits are in school on this days; it is advised that children bring their kit into school on the first day of each half term and they will be sent home at the end of the half term so that they can we washed.
Phonics sessions take place each morning and we are working hard to plug any gaps from previous years due to the learning the children have missed whilst all schools have been closed. The DfE have decided that the children in Year 2 will take their Phonics Screening Check (which should have taken place in June 2020 whilst they were in Year1) during the autumn term. Therefore, your child will be tested on their phonic knowledge and their ability to decode before the Christmas break. Please can you support your child in learning their spellings each week as these are linked to the gaps the children currently have.
In year 2, we usually attend a few trips throughout the year. If things change in the foreseeable future, these trips will go ahead, and you will be given plenty of notice. Each trip is £15 per child which pays for the coach and location. We hope to go to:
- Knowsley Safari Park
- Liverpool World Museum
- The Wold of Glass
Homework is distributed on Friday and should be returned to school no later than the Tuesday of the following week. The children will receive a piece of English and Maths work and spellings to practise. Our weekly spelling test is on a Friday morning, so it is vital that children are learning their spellings every night of the week leading up to Friday.
The children are greatly encouraged to read at least four times each week at home. This can be their school reading book or any other text that they choose.
